Guardrail/Debris Containment System

The RidgeGuard System is designed to replace traditional wooden guardrail systems. RidgeGuard provides a guardrail for personnel and additional debris containment to protect personnel and property below the work surface. The RidgeGuard System offers significant material and installation cost savings while providing an additional level of Safety on the jobsite.

The hi-viz netting panels are supported at a height of 42” by a horizontal upper cable assembly and attached at two foot intervals on the cable. The lower portion of the panel is attached to the decking at 5 ft intervals. When installed as instructed the netting panel replaces the mid rail and the toe board used in traditional systems. The RidgeGuard system exceeds design and strength requirements for guardrails and is recognized as an alternative to traditional system surface. The RidgeGuard System offers significant material and installation cost savings while providing an additional level of Safety on the jobsite.

Description: System is designed to provide a guardrail for personnel and to provide light debris containment to protect personnel and property below the work surface.

WARNING: System is NOT designed as a means of attachment for fall arrest or fall restraint for personnel. System consists of a panel of netting material supported by a 3/8” horizontal cable system suspended between vertical structures. The net panel is attached to the cable and to the structure below the cable in accordance with installation instructions to form a guardrail between the work area and the leading edge of the structure. The panel is designed to meet the requirements of a mid-rail and a toe board while providing additional debris containment protection to personnel below the work surface.

Installation: Note: Structure used to attach the ends of the upper cable assembly must be capable of withstanding an end load of 6400 lbs. (28.5kN) to maintain a safety factor of 2:1. All cable and end hardware components used to support the cable must have a breaking strength capable of meeting the end loading requirements. The cable is installed on the vertical structure at a height or 42”. Intermediate supports are required at a height of 42” at maximum 30 ft. intervals to ensure cable remains at a minimum height of 36” (.9m) under a vertical point load of 100 lbs. (450n). An in-line tensioning device (turnbuckle p/n RG- TBJJ1212) is required to ensure that cable remains taught and does not sag below 36” (.9m) under a vertical point load of 100 lbs. (450n). The cable assembly must also exceed a minimum lateral point load of 150 lbs. (675n). Capture the entire reinforced portion of the upper border of the net panel at maximum intervals of 24” (.6M) and secure using spring loaded 5/16” snap hooks (p/n RG-SH516) or plastic cable ties (p/n RG-CT20-50). Secure bottom reinforced border portion of the net to the deck at maximum intervals of 60” (1.5m) using base plated (p/n RG-BP) and appropriate fasteners to secure the base plates to the deck material. The base portion is designed to exceed the minimum lateral point load of 50 lbs. (225n). If the guardrail system is located at the perimeter for the work surface, the distance between the edge of the surface and the guardrail system shall not be more than 12” (300m). End portions of the netting between the upper cable and base plate are secured to the vertical structure to eliminate gaps between the material and the vertical structure allowing debris to pass through. The material is designed to exceed a minimum lateral point load of 100 lbs. (450n). When joining net panels, the panels must overlap a minimum of 18” (.45m) and must be secured using base plates.(p/n RG-BP).

Installation methods for cable assembly: Each section of cable must include at least one turnbuckle (p/n RG-TBJJ1212) to tension cable. Typical end anchor methods for the cable assembly are as follows:

1. Wrap end of cable (p/n RG-38-719) around vertical column at height of 42” and secure cable using a minimum 6-1/2” turnback secured with a minimum of two 3/8” heavy duty wire rope slips (p/n RG-WRC38HD), using a torque of 45 ft.lbs. and ensuring that the U-bolt portion of the clip wraps around the dead end of the cable. 2. Form a thimble eye with end of cable by bending cable (p/n RG-WR38HD), using a torque of 45 ft.lbs. and ensuring that the U-bolt portion of the clip wraps around the dead end of the cable. Use this assembly to attachι to ½” x 12” heavy duty jaw & jaw turnbuckle (p/n RG-TBJJ1212) and attach other end of turnbuckle to end anchor component at a height of 42”. The end anchor and intermediate components vary depending on the type of structure the system is being attached to. Recommended options are listed below. Installation instructions are provided with component parts listed below. Alternate end and intermediate support methods are acceptable provided they exceeded the strength requirements stated above.

Inspection: The netting panel material should be inspected for holes, cuts, tear, snags, heat, chemical damage, etc. Damaged material should be cut away and discarded. Remaining portions of undamaged materials can be re-used in accordance with installation instructions. Inspect all hardware for corrosion, cracks, distortion or burs. Defective components should be removed from service.
